One of the major goals of FICAM is to develop 2 and 3D tissue models to be used to supplement and/or replace animal experiments in efficacy and safety testing of e.g. pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, cosmetic components, preservatives etc. The developed models are based on human primary cells or cells differentiated from stem cells. Models will be built to combine several cell types with supporting material. The ultimate goal is to build human tissue modeling bioreactors.

The method development process can be divided into three stages. First a scientifically solid model will be developed (scientific proof of concept). The performance is shown by using typical known model compounds. Then the model will be optimized, which process ends up to SOP (Standard Operating Procedure). In the last stage the model is validated in compliance with the OECD and other international relevant guidelines under the GLP.
