The 28th Workshop of SSCT and the FINCOPA Seminar"Towards toxicity assessment without animals"
Call for Papers
Time: Wednesday 21st – Friday 23rd September 2011
Welcome to Tampere to the 28th Workshop of SSCT and Fincopa Seminar!
Dear Colleagues, The 28th workshop of Scandinavian Society for Cell Toxicology (SSCT) will be organized as a joint meeting with the Finnish Consensus Platform for Alternatives (Fincopa) 21-23 September 2011 in Tampere. The theme is “Towards toxicity assessment without animals”. We live in a chemical world. However, the safety of the chemicals to man and the risks to the environment have been studied for only a fraction of the chemical substances. The pressure to perform toxicity assessment without animals comes from various stakeholders: regulatory guidelines such as Cosmetic directive prohibit the use of animals in assessing the safety of cosmetics or cosmetic ingredients, and REACH calls for non-animal tests to be performed when ever possible, European Commission´s goal is to decrease the use of laboratory animals, industry wants cheaper and more reliable test methods than animal experiments. Today, the toxicity assessment is mostly performed with animals, but more and more robust alternative (in vitro) tests are being developed. The developing science, use of human cells and novel tissue engineering as well as instrumentation solutions have made possible the change from in vivo to in vitro testing . The Fincopa seminar, free and open to all participants, will concentrate on the status of new in vitro methods covered by EU-FP-7-project to replace/supplement animal experiments. The 28th SSCT workshop will start with the new updated directive of 2010/63/EU (22.09.2010) and its impact on the toxicity testing strategy, followed by presentations on in vitro methods from scientific and technical perspectives. The other topics cover: - A new paradigm: Away from histopathology-based toxicity assessment- Optimal in vitro cellular model - Significance of barriers in toxicity risk assessment Advanced technical solutions are of utmost importance for successful cell culture research and test development. The area is developing very fast. To bring scientists up to date with new technical solutions a commercial exhibition will be organized in connection with the workshop. We are looking forward to have a meeting with up-to-date scientific knowledge. We wish you warmly welcome to Tampere and call you to send abstracts to be presented as oral presentations or as posters. On behalf of the OrganizersTuula Heinonen

The invited speakers and participants having free oral or poster presentations are invited to submit a paper according to the instructions for authors for the SSCT special issues in Toxicology in Vitro.
All papers will need to be submitted to the EES system of the journal, and labeled as “SSCT 2011 special issue” in the “article type name” field.
All instructions to authors that are listed in the EES system also apply, with the following additions:
1. The papers should clearly be related to the presentations made during the SSCT 2011 meeting in Tampere, according to the judgment of the guest editors.
2. There are restrictions to the length of the articles:
- for papers submitted by invited speakers: 20 pages double-spaced print, and including all materials, e.g. reference list, figures and tables
- for papers submitted by other oral presenters and poster presenters: 15 pages double-spaced print, and including all materials, e.g. reference list, figures and tables
The guest editors (T. Heinonen and H. Tähti) together with the European Editor (B. Blaauboer) will act as the editors for this special issue.
